Victor Victor Mesa, Victor Mesa Jr. and Sandy Gaston are all scheduled to have a workout for MLB teams tomorrow. The workout was originally supposed to be in the Dominican Republic but was moved to Marlins’ Park in Miami. This could be a type of advantage for Marlins’ fans. With the workout being in Miami. It gives the Mesas and Gaston a chance to experience the Miami culture.
If the three players enjoyed themselves in Miami, there’s a chance they could lean towards signing with the Marlins. It’s possible that the Mesas are a package deal while Gaston would be separate. If the Mesas are a package it could save a little more money and could be used to sign Gaston.
Meet the Players
Victor Victor Mesa, Victor Mesa Jr. and Sandy Gaston are all from Cuba. The Mesa brother’s father, Victor Mesa Sr. is a Cuban Baseball Legend. I wrote about Victor Victor earlier this year when he was declared a free agent.
Victor Victor Mesa is a twenty two year old outfielder who is considered an elite defender. His arm strength would be a huge plus in the vast outfield of Marlins’ Park . Mesa batted a .354/.399/.539 with seven homers and 40 steals in just 70 games in his last season in the Cuban National Series. That stat line really shows what potential he has.
Victor Mesa Jr. is a sixteen year old switch hitting outfielder with no professional experience. Although he did appear for Cuba’s 18U National team, he has no stats to base any prediction on.
Sandy Gaston is a sixteen year old flame-throwing right handed pitcher. As a sixteen year old, he’s already touched 100 mph which shows amazing potential. Its common for Gaston to hit 94-95 mph. With proper instruction from a club that signs him, his secondary pitches will begin to develop into above average weapons. That goes for his fastball command as well. Yes, he can throw extremely hard, but right now his control is a bit iffy. He walked 46 hitters in 47 innings in his final season with Cuba’s 18U team.
If the Marlins can pull off these signings, the Cuban fan base in Miami could be returning to the stadium. The Mesa brothers are well known across the Cuban baseball world, even just signing them would get the attention of Cuban fans.
The Orioles are also in the mix for these players but with the firing of their manager and general manager, that doesn’t put a good look to the organization. With the Marlins having a plan for their rebuild, it shows that they’re prepared and know what they’re doing. The situation in Baltimore gives the Marlins a slight advantage in signing these players.
