3 Reasons to Support Miami Women’s Basketball

The Miami Hurricane Women’s basketball team will play Iowa State today at 4:30pm. The Women’s team is an exciting group of talented student athletes that everyone should get out and support this season. Here are three reasons why they deserve your support:

A Different Star Every Night

The Hurricanes are currently 4-0 going into today’s WNIT Championship game. In each of those four games, a different Hurricane has led the way with 20+ points. Their opening game against FIU featured Junior Sarah Mortensen dropping 24 points on 8-9 shooting from three-point range. In game two versus Stephen F Austin, it was Mykea Gray. Gray had 25 points on 9-15 shooting. Two nights later, Emese Hof poured in 21 in a 13-point victory over Hartford. Then, on Thursday night, Beatrice Mompremier scored 24 points and grabbed 21 rebounds as the Lady Canes upset #19 Marquette 63-55. There’s no telling what is going to happen in any given game. The only thing that is certain is if you show up to a Miami women’s game, you’re in for a show.

They’re a consistently good team

Since 2009, the Lady Hurricanes have only had one season in which they won less than 20 games. Coach Meier’s squad has made seven of the last eight NCAA Tournaments. In the history of Miami’s program, they have accumulated: 758 victories, 27 all-conference honorees, 26 1,000-point scorers, 21 post season berths, 9 all-Americans, 6 WNBA draftees, 2 Conference Players of the Year, and 1 National Player of the Year. It may not be well-known, but the Lady Hurricanes are a consistently top 25 team that deserve your respect and support.

They’re a University of Miami athletics program

While women’s basketball may fly under the radar, the fact remains that these are University of Miami student athletes. These young ladies work extremely hard as both students and athletes and if you claim to be a fan of UM, they deserve your support as well. Tickets are cheap and easy to get, so gather up the family on a Saturday or Sunday afternoon and head over to the Watsco Center for some fun and fantastic basketball.

The Lady Canes (4-0) will play against Iowa State today at 4:30pm in the championship of the WNIT Tournament.

Go Canes!
