Rapid Fire Recap: Miami Hurricanes vs. Bethune-Cookman

The Miami Hurricanes survived a scare vs. The Bethune-Cookman Wildcats on Saturday. The Hurricanes trailed at halftime but thanks to Chris Lykes and Dj Vasiljevic, they were able to put the game away late winning 78-70. For a full in-depth recap head here: ncaahoopsdigest.com. Here’s what you need to know:

  • Chris Lykes scored 21 points, 19 in the second half, to lead the Hurricanes. He is the first UM player to score 20+ in the first three games since 1989. Lykes also had a team high six assists.
  • DJ Vasiljevic scored 20 points including the dagger three with 33 seconds left in the game. DJ was perfect from the free throw line (6-6) and shot 44% (5-9) from three-point range.
  • Anthony Lawrence was the only other Hurricane that scored double-digits. He scored 13 points and added a team high nine rebounds.
  • Deng Gak played only 11 minutes but had one of the games biggest moments. With the Canes up five and less than a minute left, Bethune-Cookman’s Mark Gordon drove to the basket for what he thought would be an easy layup. However, he only found 6’10” Gak who snatched the shot straight out of the air to keep Miami ahead.
  • Malik Maitland for the Wildcats had a game-high 29 points on 11-16 shooting.
  • The Hurricanes shot only 40% from the field and 31% from three-point range, their worst showing of the young season.
  • The Hurricanes will travel to California later this week to take part in the Wooden Classic. The Wooden Classic Field features eight teams including Northwestern and Fresno State.
  • Miami will open the tournament against the 0-4 La Salle Explorers. That game is scheduled for Thursday at 2:30pm.
