Rapid Fire Recap: Miami vs. Fresno State

The Miami Hurricanes advanced to the finals of the Wooden Classic on Friday with a 78-76 victory over Fresno State. The game was intense and included 11 ties and ten lead changes. Zach Johnson’s last second put back dunk gave the Hurricanes a dramatic victory. Here’s what you need to know:

  • Miami allowed Fresno State to shoot 60% in the first half while only shooting 42%.
  • The Hurricanes went into halftime down 41-37. Following halftime, Miami opened the second half on a 10-0 run.
  • Coach Larranaga’s squad found themselves trailing 70-68 with just over 4 minutes remaining when Lykes took over. The 5’7” sophomore went on his own 5-0 run to put the Canes up by three with 0:18 remaining. On the defensive end of the floor, Zach Johnson fouled Deshon Taylor on a three-point attempt. Taylor made all three to tie the game at 76 with 13 seconds remaining.
  • Johnson would immediately make up for his mistake. With only a few seconds remaining, Lykes crossed up a defender and attempted a three. The shot missed but Johnson was there to slam it home and give Miami the 78-76 victory.
  • Johnson (24), Lykes (17), Vasiljevic (12), and Izundu (10) all contributed double digits
  • Deshon Taylor (25) and Braxton Huggins (28) for Fresno State combined for 58 of the Bulldog’s 76 points.
  • DJ Vasiljevic has now made three or more three-pointers in every game this season.
  • Dewan Hernandez was sorely missed as Miami’s depth was tested by early foul trouble. He is still being held out while the NCAA and University review his eligibility.
  • The Hurricanes will play the winner of Seton Hall vs. Hawaii on Sunday night at 10:30pm for the championship. The game will be broadcast on ESPN2.

In other news, the Miami Women’s team defeated Nebraska 82-68. Cornelius led the scoring with 23. Don’t forget that for full in-depth recaps, visit NCAA Hoops Digest. That is all for now, and as always, go Canes!
