Top 10 Marlins All Time: #5 Gary Sheffield

Gary Sheffield, one of the best Marlins to put on the uniform finds his place at #5 on this list…

The Florida Marlins was his longest tendered team of is career. He spent a total of six years with the club from 1993 to 1998.Sheffield did not start with Florida however. He was traded from the Padres to the Marlins in 1993 in a trade that included future Hall of Famer Trevor Hoffman.

Despite being traded mid-season to the Marlins, Sheffield hit 20 homers with 73 RBIs while maintaining a .294 average throughout the season. During his first year with the Marlins, Sheffield earned himself into the 1993 All Star Game. He would become an All Star three times during his time in South Florida.

Sheffield proved to be a vital piece during the Marlins 1997 World Series run. During the World Series, Sheffield played all seven games and hit for a .292 average. He slugged one homer but drove in 5 runs to help the Marlins defeat the Indians in seven games.

Unfortunately during the 1998 season, Sheffield would be traded to the Los Angeles Dodgers. He was traded along with Manuel Barrios, Charles Johnson, Bobby Bonilla, and Jim Eisenreich for Mike Piazza and Todd Zeile. It was rumored that the Marlins traded Sheffield because they couldn’t afford another contract extension.

“You’ve got to bring on the same intensity no matter what the circumstances may be.”

– Gary Sheffield, Baseball Almanac

Sheffield would finish his time with the Marlins with a .288 average, 122 homers, 380 RBIs, and a World Series ring. Sheffield also finished with a walk to strikeout ratio of 424-290 which is incredible. Shame the Marlins couldn’t give him another extension, he would’ve been the face of the franchise for a long time.

Sheffield is a first year ballot for the Hall of Fame this year and with his career numbers being as impressive as they are, its possible he makes it in on his first try. Who knows, he may go into Cooperstown wearing a Marlins cap.
