FAU Football: Kiffin’s Kingdom

Lane Kiffin is well known in college football. His stint at USC and his work under Nick Saban at Alabama have all attributed to the spotlight he carries now in Boca. In Kiffin’s two and half years at FAU, he has shown why he is held in such high regard.

“This is by far our best class…”

-FAU Head Coach Lane Kiffin, per FAU Football Signing Day Press Conference

This past National Signing Day of 2019, Kiffin managed to pull in the number one recruiting class in the C-USA. Kiffin had gotten good recruiting classes before, but this one stacks even higher because of the talent. In his signing day conference, Kiffin mentioned that previous recruitment classes mainly patched holes and stuck to mostly Florida kids. This class went beyond in acquiring really good players, as well as out of state kids.

A full list of the recruits and analyst can be found on 247Sports. The class ranks 60th on a national scale, compared to 75th last year. Here are the top 5 recruits based on ratings.

FAU Top 5 Recruits 2019:

  1. Cameron Wynn – ATH, 5-11, 175 lbs, Chattanooga, TN (Signed)
  2. Diamante Howard – LB, 6-2, 180, Miami, FL (Enrolled)
  3. Glover Cook – RB, 6-0, 180, Ocala, FL (Hard Commit)
  4. Latrell Jean – DE, 6-2, 255, Lakeland, FL (Signed)
  5. JD Martin – WR, 6-0, 185, Wetumpka, AL (Signed)

The class goes even deeper than these five guys, but this is just a taste of the work Kiffin did here.

Last year, FAU was out-recruited by Butch Davis and FIU and many thought the same would happen this year. Not Lane Kiffin though. When FAU ended up with the better recruiting class, it made for a nice opportunity for the Owls coach to show that FAU was still on top.

Despite a disappointing 5-7 season for the Owls, they did win the Shula Bowl in convincing fashion. Further proving that Kiffin knows how to beat rival FIU. Besides, sometimes not having success can lead to opportunities for success elsewhere. At least, that’s what Kiffin was able to get out of the past season.

“That season (2018) not going to a championship, not going to a bowl game was very frustrating at the time, but we were able to spend so much more time recruiting than the year before.”

-FAU Head Coach Lane Kiffin, per FAU Football Signing Day Press Conference

Kiffin was also able to recruit a few big names in Terique Owens and Warren Sapp II the sons of NFL stars Terrell Owens and Warren Sapp respectively. They won’t count towards this years class though, as they will be blue shirt recruits.

While this new class does fill holes created by the departure of key players, it also expands to add talent to positions that were under-performing last year. specifically on the defensive side of the football. Coach thinks that many of these guys can help the team right away and that will need to be the case as FAU looks to bounce back.

One thing is for certain, regardless of any any rumors and speculation out there, as long as Lane Kiffin is at the helm of the Owls, it will continue to be his kingdom.
