FAU Owls Set for NFL Combine

The 2019 NFL Combine begins tomorrow, February 26th. The combine is notorious for raising and sinking players draft stocks. A good combine can really help to catch the eyes of NFL executives. That’s exactly what the 3 FAU Owls participating in the combine this week are hoping for. It has been a while since FAU had this much talent heading into the NFL at once. However, with Lane Kiffin’s superb recruiting classes, it could become a regular thing to have a lot of Owls heading to the NFL.

Let’s take a quick look at the 3 Owls that will be taking place in the NFL Combine. For FAU fans, they’ll definitely be familiar.

Jovon Durante WR 6′ 0″ 168 lbs

Durante came over to FAU from WVU last year. He was one of the first Owls to declare for the NFL draft after the season concluded. Durante had a very solid year, leading the FAU wide receivers. He had  65 total catches for 873 receiving yards, as well 5 TDs on the season. Durante displayed a nice connection with FAU QB Chris Robison. He may not have great intangibles as an NFL wide out, not being too tall or too strong. However, he may be able to win scouts over with his speed and hands.

Azeez Al-Shaair LB 6’2″ 227 lbs

Al-Shaair is pretty much a staple in FAU defensive history. He lead the team in many categories, mainly tackles, and besides being an excellent player, is also a great leader. Much of FAU’s bad play on defense last year can attributed to not having this man out on the field. He had his senior season cut short because of a torn ACL.

However, he supposedly has had enough time to rehab and recover. So he will be taking place in the combine to show that the injury has not diminished his athleticism. Because if Azeez still has that, he is a lock to be taken off the board quickly. He is a smart player, a great leader, and a terrific tackler. In the 2017 season for the Owls, Al-Shaair racked up 93 total tackles. He has claimed multiple C-USA honors and has a large resume to bring to any NFL team looking for help at LB, maybe even Miami.

Devin Singletary RB 5’9″ 200 lbs

What else can be said about “Motor” Singletary? If you have followed our coverage of FAU football, you know how much we love the Motor. He is perhaps the great Owl football player in their history. Singletary leads the program in all-time rushing yards at 4,289. He has the top 4 single game rushing performances. Motor also leads FAU with 66 career TDs, including 32 in a single season (2017). His stats are enough to speak for them self.

What kind of NFL back can he be though? Singletary’s game fit the college style offense perfectly. He was never a great pass catcher and he is a solid pass protector. However, both of those things will be under the microscope in the NFL. Singletary’s stock is already pretty high, as some have him as the second best RB in the class. But he can really use the combine to help boost his stock even higher. Showing off that speed and elusiveness while displaying his football IQ.

It’s not a stretch to say that I think Singletary will get taken on day 2, and early. He is the most talented prospect coming out of FAU in forever.
