The FAU Men’s basketball team captured their 14th win of the season after beating the UTEP Miners on Thursday, 61-48.

The Owls controlled the game right out of the gate and never really looked back. It was their best defensive performance of the year for the team. As they held the Miners to only 19 first half points and 29 in the second half. UTEP is one of the weaker teams in the C-USA, but with FAU being on the road, anything could have happened. FAU was able to put their last close loss to USM out of mind and lock down this performance.

Fortunately, the Owls did not let UTEP make any major runs in the game to regain the lead. Anthony Adger led FAU with 27 points, including 8/11 from 3-point land. Xavian Stapleton led the team on the glass with 9 rebounds, despite an off scoring night. FAU shot 50% from downtown and held their opponent to 28% shooting for the game. Richardson Maitre also returned from a  concussion, but played 21 minutes off the bench. Ellis got the start again alongside Forrest, Adger, Zecevic, and Lepichev.

Despite the win, FAU is still only 8th in the conference, with a 5-6 C-USA record. That loss to USM really hurt their standings and they will need to win the next few game to make any kind of run. That will be easier said than done, as their next game is at UTSA. The Roadrunners are 8-3 in the conference and sit at 3rd place. The Owls will face them on Saturday at 4 p.m. EST in San Antonio, Texas. It will be their final road game of the regular season.

If FAU can play the lock down defense that they played in this game, they could have a shot at the upset.
