Game 2 of 162: Colorado Rockies vs. Miami Marlins

Well, all the excitement is over, at least for some people. However, not for me and I hope not for you. We have 161 more games this season! Unfortunately, the Marlins did not come away with a win yesterday, but that is okay because it is a long season. Let’s take a look at game 2 and see what the Marlins need to do in order to win this game.

Game 2:

Pitching Matchup: German Marquez vs. Trevor Richards

Game time: 7:10 PM

Location: Marlins Park

In the first night game of the season, the Marlins face right-handed pitcher Marquez. Marquez (14-11 with a 3.77 ERA in 2018) had career-high starts, innings pitched, strikeouts, and WAR in 2018. Probably the most impressive thing about Marquez’s 2018 season is the strikeout numbers. In 2017, he had 29 starts and struck out 147 batters. In 2018, he had 33 starts and struck out 230 batters. Marquez had just 4 more starts and struck out almost 100 more batters.

The Marlins will send right-handed pitcher Trevor Richards to the mound in game two of this series. Richards is coming off of his rookie campaign. In his rookie season, Richards finished 4-9 with an ERA of 4.42 and 130 strikeouts. Richards has one of the nastiest changeups in the league, and it will be an important pitch for him this season.

It’s the time you all have been waiting for. The question that will be asked all year, what do the Marlins need to do in order to win this game? The answer is the same for game one as it was for game two. Get the starting pitcher out of the game. Marquez has great stuff and will strike out Miami batters. If the Marlins want a chance to win this game, then need to get the pitch count up and get into the bullpen.

Prediction

My prediction for game two is the same as game one. The Rockies will win this game because the Marlins will struggle to hit Marquez. I predict that the Marlins will open the 2019 season with a record of 0-2.
