Hope everyone had a good St. Patrick’s Day weekend. Here is what you need to know today.
1. Selection Day for Lady Canes: Although Miami did not win the ACC tournament, they are still going to receive an at-large bid for their play this season. The Canes were 24-8 in the regular season and finished third in the ACC. However, they were eliminated by Syracuse in ACC tournament play. Currently Miami is projected to be a three seed and face Florida Gulf-Coast.
2. Owl and Golden Panthers find CIT: Although the FIU Golden Panthers were eliminated in the first round of C-USA tournament play, their season is not over yet. The Golden Panthers have received an invitation to the CIT tournament. While this isn’t the “Big Dance”, it is still a huge accomplishment for first year head coach, Jeremy Ballard to be invited to a postseason tournament. The Panthers play Texas State in the first round on Saturday at 7:00 P.M.
Florida Atlantic (17-15) will join their neighbors to the south in the CIT as they open on Thursday against Charleston Southern.
3. Heat win key game: The Heat took on the Charlotte Hornets last night in Miami. The Heat and Hornets were tied going into halftime, however Miami took control in the second half to beat Charlotte 93-75. Miami gained a game on the Hornets who are still in the hunt for the eight seed in the East. Miami was lead by veteran guard, Goran Dragic who lead the Heat with 19 points off the bench. The Heat start a four game road-trip in Oklahoma City tonight. OKC won the first match-up between these teams in Miami 118-102. The Thunder will be without star point guard, Russell Westbrook who is suspended. Tip-off is at 8:00.
4. Panthers fall to Ducks: The Panthers were out west in Anaheim yesterday taking on the Ducks. The Ducks lead 1-0 after the first period and 2-1 after the second period. Aaron Ekblad tied things for Florida in the third, however the Ducks’ Jakob Silfverburg put in the game winner to send the Ducks home with a 3-2 win. The Panthers four game win streak comes to an end. Florida takes on Dallas, Tuesday night.
