Happy Tuesday everybody. Here are the top stories in Miami sports today.
Panthers drop high-scoring affair: The Panthers were north of the border last night to take on the Toronto Maple Leafs. After the first period, things were already off to a hot start with the Leafs out to a 4-2 lead. The Leafs would add another in the second to go up 5-2. Huberdeau scored two goals in the third, but that was still not enough as the Leafs go on to win 7-5. Center, John Tavraes was the big star for the Leafs, scoring an incredible four goals. As for Florida, they are still not technically eliminated from playoff contention, and continue their tour of Canada tonight, taking on the Canadiens in Montreal. The Panthers are looking to split the season series with Montreal. Puck drops at 7:30 P.M.
Heat face Magic in key game: D-Wade and the Heat are in action tonight. They host their in-state rival, the Orlando Magic. This is a crucial game for the Heat as only half a game separates them and Orlando for the eight seed out East. Orlando is coming off a win last night over the 76ers, 119-98. Miami beat Washington their last time out 113-108. As for the season series, Orlando leads the series 2-1, so the Heat will look to split the series tomorrow night. Tip-off is at 7:30 P.M. Marlins release Straily: The Marlins announced yesterday that they will be releasing starting pitcher, Dan Straily. The 30 year Straily was 15-15 in his two seasons with the Fish. Straily was limited in action last year and was on the injured list twice due to oblique issues. Straily pitched in 16 2/3 innings this spring for the Marlins, with an ERA near 6.00.
Urena officially Opening Day starter: In other Marlins’ news, the club officially announced that Jose Urena will be the Opening Day starter. Urena, 27, is 28-33 in his career with an ERA of 4.45.
Miami Open continues: Tennis’ Miami Open is still ongoing at Hard Rock Stadium this week. Fourth ranked male competitor, Roger Federer beat his opponent, Filip Krajinovic 7-5, 6-3. Federer takes on 13th ranked, Danlil Medvedev tonight. Also, in action today is the number one male, Novak Djokovic. Djokovic takes on 24th overall, Roberto Bautista Agut of Spain. These matches are the round of 16. The semifinals and finals take place later this week.
Golden Panthers in CIT Action: The FIU Golden Panthers are in tournament action tonight against the Green Bay Phoenix in the second round of the CollegeInsider.com tournament. A win would be just the second postseason win in team history. Their first came this past Friday against Texas State. The Golden Panthers are looking for win number 21, which would equal the most wins by a men’s basketball team in program history. Tip-off is at 8:00 P.M. Fans can watch the game at this link here
