With the 13th pick in the 2019 NFL draft, the Miami Dolphins selected Christian Wilkins, DT out of Clemson.
After waiting for what felt like an eternity, the Miami Dolphins finally made their pick. They had plenty of options. A variety of directions to go in. Well…you saw what they chose to do.
Christian Wilkins is no doubt a talented defensive lineman. He helped man the front for a National Championship defense in Clemson. He fits what the Dolphins need in terms of a versatile pass rusher and run stopper. New head coach, Brian Flores, was expected to require many defensive players to execute his style of play.

On day one of the draft, it looks like general manager Chris Grier is obliging. Still, it does not change the fact that Miami had the opportunity to draft a replacement at RT in Jawaan Taylor. As well as a possible franchise QB in Dwayne Haskins. It was as good a board as Miami could imagine.
Thanks to early round reaches by some teams like the Giants, who took Daniel Jones sixth, the Dolphins had their pick of the litter. This decision will be one the shapes the career for Grier and Flores. Taylor and Haskins can both be effective players that Miami looks back on in spite.
As well, Miami could have looked to trade down, as many speculated early on. The extra draft capital would have helped in case Miami wants to pursue Josh Rosen from Arizona. As Rosen looks to be the odd man out after the Cards selected Kyler Murray number one overall.
The pick also solidifies the fact that Miami was indeed not all-in on any QB in this draft, besides maybe Murray. As QB Drew lock was also on the board.
Wilkins may very well have a great rookie season in Miami. He also may not have any effect at all. Only the future can tell.
